How to clean and care for brass jewellery

Men's plain brass cuff bracelet with a warm golden finish

Brass is a metal with a life of its own. New, it has a warm golden shine. Worn every day, it slowly darkens into a deeper, softer tone. Some people love that change. Others like to keep their pieces bright. Both are easy, and this guide covers each.

Why brass darkens

Brass is an alloy made mostly of copper. When copper meets air, moisture and the natural oils on your skin, it slowly oxidises. That's what darkens the surface over time, and it's completely normal.

Why brass can turn skin green

The same reaction can sometimes leave a faint green mark where a ring or cuff sits. It isn't harmful and washes off with soap and water. It's more likely in warm weather, after exercise or if your hands are often damp.

If you have sensitive skin or a known metal allergy, please read the listing carefully and get in touch before you buy. We'd rather answer a question than have you uncomfortable.

Everyday care for brass jewellery

  • Take your cuff or ring off before washing up, swimming or showering.
  • Put on perfume, hand cream and sun cream first, and let them dry before you put on your jewellery.
  • After wearing, wipe each piece with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Store pieces separately in a pouch or small box, away from damp bathrooms.

How to clean brass at home

Light cleaning: wash the piece in warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid, then dry it completely with a soft cloth.

Heavier tarnish: mix a little lemon juice with salt to make a paste. Rub it gently over the brass with a soft cloth, rinse well in clean water and dry thoroughly. A shop-bought brass polish does the same job.

Coated or plated pieces: if a listing says a piece is coated or plated, skip the lemon and the polish. Use only soap, water and a soft cloth so you don't wear the finish away.

How to stop brass marking your skin

Keeping brass clean and dry is the best way to reduce marks. Some people also paint a thin layer of clear nail varnish on the inside of a ring or cuff. It wears off over time, so reapply it every few weeks.

Or let it age

Hammered brass looks especially good as it darkens. The raised edges catch the light and stay brighter, while the hollows deepen in tone. Our men's hammered brass cuff and spiral wrap ring both take on real character this way. If you like that look, simply wear your piece and leave it be.
